After the Nakba, Palestinians who stayed in the 1948 areas have suffered from a systematic Israeli policy that aims at eradicating their Palestinian identity. Educational systems are a powerful mechanism for transmitting culture, Palestinians are prevented from developing their own school systems or curricula. The only schools available are Israeli government schools with curricula designed to deny the existence of Palestine or missionary schools. Welfare Association is supporting the initiative of the League of Jaffa Arabs to establish a local school for Palestinian children. The main aim is to provide children with quality education that enriches them with the Palestinian identity, language, culture, heritage and history.

The Arab Democratic “Jaffa” school is housed in a well- preserved historic building with Arab architectural features located on 13 Gaza Street in Jaffa. The school serves 195 Palestinian students from preschool to 9th grade with ambitions to add one grade every year till 12th grade. It is a bilingual school with emphasis on Arabic and the staff is experienced professionals and educators.

The school is largely dependent on outside donations. Mr. Gabi Abed, President of the League, said “We deeply appreciate the support of Welfare Association. The cooperation with Welfare Association started in 1985 and their contribution, by supporting “Jaffa” school, to preserve the Palestinian culture and identity in the 1948 areas is enormous.”
