WA launches the “Active Learning Manual for Kindergarten Teachers” in Beirut

Welfare Association announced on 11 September the launch of the “Active Learning Manual for Kindergarten Teachers: Concepts and Activities” in Beirut in the context of the recently completed project “Pre-School Education Program for Palestinian Refugees”. The manual was developed and produced in partnership with the Arab Resource Collective (ARC) and in collaboration with educators and teachers working in nine kindergartens from seven Palestinian camps.

This initiative fulfills Welfare Association’s objective to promote that promote active learning concepts and techniques which place the child at the center of the learning process. It is based on the Holistic Comprehensive Approach in early childhood development and supports Kindergarten teachers in achieving their educational objectives in partnership with the child. The package is also designed to be durable and adaptable. It consists of an introductory booklet and 32 detachable laminated pages with color-coded topics, affording flexibility in utilizing the manual and its chapters. It will be distributed to every teacher in 82 Palestinian Kindergartens.

The publication of the manual is the final activity of the project “Pre-School Education Program for Palestinian Refugees” which began in May 2005and was funded by Medical Aid for Palestine – Canada and Canadian Institute for Development Aid. Welfare Association implemented the project through a Steering Committee of seven local NGO partners: Association Najdeh, Beit Atfal Sumoud, the General Union of Palestinian Women, the Ghassan Kanafani Cultural Foundation, Inaash, the National Association for Medical and Social Care, and the Nabila Breir Foundation.

In addition to the manual, project achievements include 1) the training of 56 teachers and animators; 2) the formation and training of a team of Teacher Trainers; 3) Renovation of building infrastructure for 9 KGs and purchase of educational material; 4) Capacity building and sustainability training through courses organized by UNDP.

The presentation ceremony of the Manual took place on 11 September at the Crowne Plaza in Beirut and brought together WA Lebanon members, members of the European Union (EU), Canadian Embassy, United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and local NGOs. ARC members gave a presentation on the preparation and design of the Manual. Manuals were distributed and many attending voiced their support for the innovative approach and valuable new knowledge on active learning methodology provided in the manual.
