The Swiss Development Agency and the Welfare Association signed a joint agreement

Through their continuous efforts to reduce unemployment in the Palestinian territories, the Swiss Development Agency and the Welfare Association signed an agreement aimed at creating sustainable job opportunities and strengthening the relation between the private and educational sectors.

The $280,000 one year project starting November 1, 2006 aims at creating immediate short term employment and training opportunities for youth through forging relations and enhancing the interfacing between the private sector (businesses and industries) on one hand and the education / training system on the other. The placement of graduates though an internship program at local, regional, and international businesses and industries is a pioneering way of creating immediate employment and transferring earned income to young Palestinians and giving them hope, competencies, and linkages for future long-term employability. The project will allow businesses and industries to fulfill their social responsibilities, particularly towards youth and to promote their active involvement in human resource development in their country. It will also allow businesses to better structure, deliver, and monitor apprenticeship and internship programs at their institutions. In addition, it might also expose them to similar experiences of other businesses who have a good track record in this field, as well as give them the opportunity to work with education and training institutions whether universities, colleges, or vocational training institutions.

The Welfare Association is in the process of choosing a steering committee from the private sector as well as from various vocational and educational institutions. Action plans are being prepared in order to start implementing the project in the coming few weeks.
