On 30 November 2006, the Welfare Association held a fundraising benefit dinner in Dubai “Jerusalem in our Hearts.” The $500,000 raised will support the Welfare’s Old City of Jerusalem Revitalization Program which aims to rehabilitate historical buildings, preserve cultural heritage and create a better quality of life for Jerusalem inhabitants. These proceeds will enable emergency repairs for more than 20 homes for multiple families providing healthy and safe shelter for more than 200 old city residents.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Rashid Al Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies and director of the Middle East Institute at Columbia University in New York City. The fund raising dinner was attended by the Welfare Board of Trustees and more than 300 friends and supporters. The evening included musical performances by the Edward Said National Conservatory Oriental Ensemble. The Welfare’s third annual Excellence Award was presented to the General Director of the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, Mr. Suheil Khoury.
